HaraldK I first came across Spiro many years ago when "The Sky is a Blue Bowl" (a live version from some BBC compilation) was recommended to me on Discover Weekly. I thought it interesting enough to save. Then one day I thought I'd look into some of those weird band with really interesting, odd tracks, and found the rest of Spiro's work.
Weird to think they've existed for so many years, and persisted for so many years with little recognition, when it's so fantastically good. Favorite track: The Sky is a Blue Bowl.

Bands often claim to be unique, but Spiro really do defy easy categorisation. They are an acoustic instrumental quartet, playing violin, mandolin, accordion and guitar (which is occasionally replaced by cello), and though they do make use of traditional themes, they are most certainly not a folk band. ... more
